The National Public Toilet Map complies with the Guidelines for Federal and ACT Government World Wide Websites (based upon the Privacy Act 1988), developed by the Office of the Federal Privacy Commissioner.

The National Public Toilet Map complies with the Information Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988, developed by the Office of the Federal Privacy Commissioner.
The key principles can be summarised as follows:

- Principle 2 - Informing people why information is collected
- Principle 3 - Ensuring personal information collected is of good quality and not too intrusive
- Principle 10 - Limiting the use of personal information to the purposes for which it was collected
- Principle 11 - Preventing the disclosure of personal information outside the agency
No attempt will be made to
identify anonymous users or their browsing activities unless legally
compelled to do so, such as in the event of an investigation, where
a law enforcement agency may exercise a warrant to inspect the Internet
Service Provider's log files.
Privacy summary
In short, the National Public Toilet Map Web site is designed to provide a balance of functionality and privacy. We need to know some information about our users (mainly about their computer and Web browser) to provide the Web site.
If you choose to provide us with additional information, like your name, email address or telephone number, we will keep it confidential and only use it to deliver the National Public Toilet Map to you. The information will only be seen by the Department and our contractors (who deliver the site and the Toilet Map Helpline).

We collect the following information that is used to help us deliver the National Public Toilet Map Web site:
- Search terms - like 'North Hobart' or 'Hobart City Council'
- Transaction history - how often you searched, whether you received any results
- HTTP protocol elements - your Web browser and operating system versions
- Click-stream data - which pages you visit on the site
At your option, we may also collect the following data:
- HTTP cookies - to help us deliver the site during your visit
This data will be used for the following purposes:
- Completion and support of the current activity
- Web site and system administration
- One-time tailoring
- Anonymous user analysis
- Anonymous user profiling and decision-making
- Historical preservation
This data will be used by ourselves and our agents.
The data in this group has been marked as non-identifiable. This means that there is no
reasonable way for the site to identify the individual person this data was collected from.
My Toilets
We collect the following information to provide the customised My Toilets section of the site to registered users:
- Transaction history - which areas of the site you have visited and added to My Toilets
- Search terms - like 'North Hobart' or 'Hobart City Council'
At the user's option, we may also collect the following data:
- User's Name - to customise My Toilets
- Phone number or mobile phone number - to contact you if there is a problem with your registration
- E-mail address - to contact you if there is a problem with your registration or if you have forgotten your password
This data will be used for the following purposes:
- Completion and support of the current activity
- Web site and system administration
- One-time tailoring
- User analysis
- User profiling and decision-making
- Historical preservation
This data will be used by ourselves and our agents.
Cookies
Cookies are a technology which can be used to provide you with tailored information from a Web site.
